Academic Conference Photography at BMVC Sheffield

Sheffield’s turn to host the British Machine Vision Conference came round last year, and Sheffield University brought me in as the academic conference photographer.

Most briefs from this kind of client come with must-have shots, key people to focus on (sometimes supplied with a helpful cribsheet of out-of-date LinkedIn portraits) and specific things they want me watching for. Alongside that, I run my own underlying brief on every conference I work on. Make everyone who was there look like they were having fun and glad they came. Make everyone who didn’t, want a ticket for next time. Catch the sponsor logos where they earn it. Get priority frames back to the comms team fast enough that they can use them while the event is still running.

Three keynotes anchored the week. Everything else filled the gaps.

Four days. Three keynotes from Phil Torr, Marc Pollefeys and Angela Dai. Seven oral sessions, six poster sessions, a doctoral consortium and a full Thursday of workshops. Topics across multimodal learning, generative models, 3D scene analysis, medical imaging, real-world applications, advanced architectures and human motion analysis.

The venue was Cutlers’ Hall, a Sheffield livery hall with centuries of history. I have photographed events there for years, but never one quite like this. Posters on diffusion models and 3D scene reconstruction hanging in rooms built for the cutlery trade.

What makes it special

Highlights

At the opening reception on Monday evening, the Master Cutler welcomed a room full of machine learning and AI researchers into a hall that has spent almost four hundred years celebrating innovation in manufacturing. It was a perfect fit.

Towards the end of the conference, I had everything the brief required already in the bag, and the freedom that comes after the safe shots are done creates an opportunity to take the picture you actually wanted. Fifteen years in, knowing when to chase the unscheduled shot is half of what makes a conference gallery feel alive instead of dutiful.
